I’m a Believer!

The last couple of weeks the roller coaster continues. I keep thinking I will hit my stride and everything will start clicking together seamlessly. My blog jumps around a bit this week but I think that is my brain pattern for now.

Last week I spent many hours studying and preparing for my Biology test. I was not feeling very confident about my knowledge so was concerned for the test. I felt I prepared the best I could. I will just say effort did not produce the grade I desired (too embarrassed to list the grade). I decided I needed a new plan to succeed, I met with the teacher, reached out to classmates to find potential study partners, spent more$$ on an online access code for the book, met with instructor and met with a tutor. The online access is helping, the tutor is helping so hoping for a better result on my weekly Tuesday quiz. My other classes are going well. Overall academic pursuits are taking up more time than I initially forecasted.

Today I started my GRE prep class. 5 hours on a Sat for the next 5 weeks, then a 2 week break, review and then the exam. I am hoping to take it before Thanksgiving, I think it will get to crazy with holidays, finals and semester end. I just need to pick my exact date and register (oh and pay $200).

Katherine is on the end in the bluish dress (very hard to find a short dress that was not too short so she opted with full length). Girls had a great time, pre party prep at my house, I cooked them dinner then off to the dance. They came back for a fun sleepover dipping their feet in the pool to ease the soreness.

Josh is #7 Josh is #7

It has been really fun to help out with Katherine’s cross country team this fall. I wish it would cool down soon. She battled it out in her last race fighting a nasty cold, and some big hills. I am proud of her for performing her best and learning from the race. Josh is having a great time with soccer I have had to miss last couple of games when I was at cross country. The kids have new science teachers so that is a huge “Amen” and there school life is going much smoother. The kids are really excited to race at the Desert Twilight Cross Country Festival next Friday. Katherine is running in Freshman race and Josh middle school race. Josh has not started cross country season (they do it in winter for our school) but he is running at least once a week and doing soccer at least 3x a week so should be in pretty good shape. I always remind my kids; regardless of their outcome I truly enjoy watching them compete in their sports and how they are developing as athletes.

Katherine is enjoying life as a high schooler, I am figuring out how to train on less sleep on the weekend when I pick her up late from parties, retreats, and most recently homecoming. Last night after a friend cancelled I filled in as her guest at Summer Ends Music Festival concert. I was dreading staying up past midnight. The last time I was at Tempe Town Lake that late was during Ironman (not sure what that says for my social life). I was really looking forward to hearing American Authors. They have 2 of my favorite songs to run to: Believer and Best Day of my Life.

I think Believer really speaks to me right now. With all I have going on I just have to believe in faith that it will all work out. I will run a 2:42 marathon and I will pass the GRE and I will get accepted into Graduate School at ASU. If you don’t have these songs on your running play list go download them NOW. I included the lyrics below:

(I’m just a believer that things will get better
Some can take it or leave it
But I don’t wanna let it go)

The other lyrics from Best Day of My Life:

I had a dream so big and loud
I jumped so high I touched the clouds

These speak to me too. I feel like my dreams are really really big! I like to set the bar high. I also embrace  the journey so it is not just about the outcome.

kind of my mantra right now. Which leads me into the next area of concern. Just when running is going well again a little tiny itsy bitsy nagging in the left hamstring. REALLY???? I backed off for a few days and had my pt guy scraped, cup, massage and stretched it. He says it is really minor and should be just fine. I just hate when hamstrings hurt. I had reduced my pt exercise sessions to 2x per week but going to bump it up to 3x on my own and 1x in the office per week. Going for a run with my team tomorrow so have my fingers crossed.

I AM A BELIEVER!!!!!

WHAT ARE YOUR DREAMS/GOALS RIGHT NOW? WHAT ARE YOU COMMITING TO BELIEVING IN RIGHT NOW?

(I’m just a believer that things will get better
Some can take it or leave it
But I don’t wanna let it go)

(I’m just a believer that things will get better
Some can take it or leave it
But I don’t wanna let it go)

I’m a little bit sheltered
I’m a little bit scared
I’m a little bit nervous
I’m goin’ nowhere

I’m a little bit jealous
I’m a little bit slow
I’m a little bit hurtful
And I don’t wanna let it go
No
And I don’t wanna let it go

I’m a little bit angry
When everyone’s around
But I get a little lonely
When no one’s out

I feel my demons misleading me

I’m just a believer that things will get better
Some can take it or leave it
But I don’t wanna let it go

I’m just a believer that things will get better
Some can take it or leave it
But I don’t wanna let it go

Maybe when I get older
And I’m in the ground
Weights off my shoulders,
It was bringin’ me down (Down)

I’ve never been that lucky
I’ve never tasted fame (Fame)
I’m always lookin’ for somethin’
But I hate changing

Time fades
There’s no space
As life breaks new ground

I’m just a believer that things will get better
Some can take it or leave it
But I don’t wanna let it go

I’m just a believer that things will get better
Some can take it or leave it
But I don’t wanna let it go

It doesn’t matter what is out there
My head is spinnin’ and I won’t bail out
It doesn’t matter what is out there

‘Cause time fades
There’s no space
As life breaks new ground

(I’m just a believer that things will get better
Some can take it or leave it
But I don’t wanna let it go)

I’m just a believer that things will get better
Some can take it or leave it
But I don’t wanna let it go

I’m just a believer that things will get better
Some can take it or leave it
But I don’t wanna let it go

(Na na na na na, nana na na na na na na na na)
(Na na na na na, nana na na na na na na na na)

I don’t wanna let it go!

The next chapter!

Life has been a bit of a whirlwind with going back to school this fall and preparing for the GRE exam (hopefully take it in late October). I am running great and building my base and excited to start speed work soon and actually schedule some races.

I am currently taking nutrition and Biology classes and labs at Mesa Community College. I 1st attended MCC when I was 19 during my first year of college. I was a full time worker and full time student trying to balance it all before I transitioned to ASU. I came back to MCC in fall 2012 to fulfill a dream of being a collegiate athlete when I ran on the cross country team. It was an amazing experience and part of me wishes I was running with them again. So here I am on round 3 fulfilling some undergrad course work so I can apply for grad school at ASU.

It is an exciting time, hopeful one day discouraged the next. Tonight having my doubts, maybe I am too old, or not smart enough to make this dream of further education become a reality. Trying to upload Biology information into my rusty brain seems similar to getting back on the track to do speed work after many months injured. I reflect back on my Ironman training days when I would chant the mantra “Yes I can, yes I can” over and over until it was my singular belief.

We are trying to find a balance at home and constantly juggling everyone’s needs (cross country, soccer, school, teacher meetings, rides, cooking, laundry and the list goes on) it seems “moms homework” is last on the list. Hoping to equal out the balance for everything and get in a rhythm this week. I write this as my son whimpers about not being able to use the computer to play Mindcraft since mom is writing a paper and needs the computer.

Kids are having a great start to the fall. Still hard to believe Katherine is in high school I know the next 4 years will fly by. Took her shopping for a homecoming dress this weekend and racing flats. Not allowed to post any pictures until after the event in a couple weeks. She ran in her first cross country meet and showed true guts and bravery racing in temps around 105 degrees and placing 5th overall. So proud of her. Josh is working hard at soccer and running with cross country kids on the weekend. Kids are hoping to qualify for Youth cross country nationals later this year.

I was so excited this am to run with my Sonoran Distance Project girls. Practice started at 5am which was really early. I had to pick Katherine up from a party and did not get home last night until 11pm so 4am wakeup was tough. It was pitch dark and a couple miles in I tripped and fell on the pavement. Yikes!! luckily just a little sore on hip elbow and hand. It was a great 10 miler but last 2 miles were tough due to humidity. My heart rate was 173 running a slow pace. I just gutted it out to finish. So glad to run with the group today. I was reading a blog today by Kate Grace she mentions “A team is more than a uniform. It’s encouragement and support before and after competition. It’s frequent interaction, about running, but also just about the daily grind. It’s friendly competition – pushing each other to the next level in workouts. It’s running together, cheering on friends together at the water-stop. – See more at: http://www.oiselle.com/blog/open-letter-flock#sthash.bqJfb2El.dpuf”. I could not agree more. I love training with others and excited to get back out there with my friends and training partners.

Well off to study some more Biology and write a paper for nutrition.
